Unique Swedish Smokeless Snus

Swedish Snus smokeless tobacco products

The first home-grown tobacco crop in Sweden dates back to 1725, grown by a farmer named Jonas Alströmer. Within a few years, he succeeded well over 100,000 plants. Of course, prior to Alströmer’s accomplishment, tobacco use in Sweden was already on the rise, having been initially imported to Sweden as early as 1638 by a shipping company with ties to a Swedish colony in the United States.

Within a few years of Alströmer’s success, however, home-grown tobacco spread throughout all of Sweden. The use of snus–or snuff, as it’s commonly known outside of Sweden–became increasingly popular over time, peaking in the years immediately following World War I. In 1919 alone, annual consumption was about seven pounds per person! While smoking gained in popularity after the war, causing a decline in the use of snus, the late 1960s again saw a rise in the use of snus, as the dangers of smoking became more widely known.

Swedish snus, widely regarded as the highest-quality snuff manufactured in the world, is made from ground tobacco, water, salt, and additives. The flavor of the snus depends on the precise mixing of different strains of tobacco and the additives used.

Swedish snus is unique in the world. The production process that applies on Swedish snus production differs from the processes used in other countries. All snus production in Sweden is under the Food Act, which means that the additives used are approved for use in food and that a high standard of hygiene is maintained. In addition, Swedish Match has also used its well known quality standard, GothiaTek® in snus production.

Due to Food Act and in combination GothiaTek®, Swedish snus preserves its uniqueness in quality and less health risk compared to most other smokeless tobacco products in the world. Swedish Match provides a guarantee a guarantee assuring the consumer that all Swedish Match products undergo controls and maintain the highest quality throughout all the stages from tobacco plant to consumer.

GothiaTek® standard has emerged as a result of successful implementation during the last several decades of research on Swedish snus. All these researches have enabled Swedish Match to produce unique products and scientific research reports within the world of tobacco. This standard complains stringent requirements on production methods and defines the highest permitted content levels of the harmful substances that are naturally present in the tobacco plant.

For the safety of your health as a consumer, GothiaTek® has striving to maintain not only the quality standard  and uniqueness but also to ensure that the production of Swedish Match’s snus is always based on the latest available knowledge regarding the choice of raw materials and production methods. Quit smoking with Nicotine Free Snus

A Story Bihind Onico

“Three years ago, a few genious were gossping about the possible production of Nicotine Free Snus at Swedish Match :” let us produce a nicotine-free pouch. “Maddness!” said one. “Impossible!” said another. A nicotine-free pouch well as caffè latte without milk, hamburger without meat or a beer without foam crown? Few understood the charm of this unlikely product, much less could they imagine that there would be a demand.

But this one was something that few other did. There was a gap to fill, a need that still. The nicotine-free pouch has been successful. Perhaps it is for the good taste. Or the need to diversify itself. Whatever, we know that there are those who drink coffee with and without milk.”

However there was a set back of Onico production due to bad quality of raw material of corn fiber. “To date, some ten cases of dental caries have been reported from a total of approximately 100,000 Onico users,” says Freddi Lewin, doctor and medical advisor at Swedish Match. “We have paid the costs for dental treatment and any travel expenses, loss of earnings and other costs for the individuals in these cases.” After extensive research, new recepie has been developed and  the risk of dental caries has been eliminated.

The new Onico is available in four varieties: original and mini, which are both similar in taste to traditional snus, and peppermint and juniper. Find more at
